Jami Attenberg: The Kept Man

In Jami Attenberg’s debut novel, The Kept Man, Jarvis starts off as a trophy wife for an up-and-coming artist. When he falls into a coma, Jarvis’s life is put on hold. At first she’s waiting for him to wake up, but as time goes on, she realizes she’s waiting for him to die. While she’s at the Laundromat one day, she meets the Kept Man Club, a group of handsome men married to wealthy women who support them. Their friendship helps her take another look at her marriage as she takes her life off hold and tries to start over. You can meet Attenberg today when she reads and signs The Kept Man. While you’re there, maybe you can ask her what well-to-do men with lives of leisure are doing at a Laundromat? (We’re just wondering.) 6 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet.
