Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark Grand Opening

Houston, it’s time to cut some ribbon and grind some pavement. At the Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark Grand Opening, you can test out your kick flips, ollies, shove-its, 360s and more — that is, after the pros give it a proper christening. Big names in skating, such as World Cup Skateboard Champion Benji Galloway, Steve “Salba” Alba, Andrew Reynolds and Steve Caballero, will be among the first to try out the 30,000-square-foot public facility, which includes plenty of poles, walls and ramps, as well as the world’s largest cradle (vertical half-sphere). The event also includes music (care of Speakerboxx DJs Dayta and Squincy Jones) and the opening of Skater Alley — five large-panel graffiti works courtesy of the Orange Show that line the entrance to the park.

After the opening, the party continues (for the 21-and-up crowd) at The Mink, with drink specials and more turntable action from Dayta, Squincy Jones, Witnes and Bird Peterson. Park opening: 1 to 5 p.m. 110 Sabine. After-party: 10 p.m. 3718 Main. For information, call 713-942-8500 or visit www.houstonparksboard.org. Free.
