Wes Anderson (
Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) is a brilliant auteur who has delivered some of the greatest dead-pan comedies of the last two decades. One of his best, though somewhat misunderstood, is
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, which continues to draw in audiences years after its release with its stylized visuals and offbeat humor.
Bill Murray plays Steve Zissou, an ocean documentary filmmaker in the same vein as Jacques-Yves Cousteau who is on a quest to hunt down and destroy the legendary jaguar shark that ate his best friend. Along for the ride is Zissou’s ex-wife (Anjelica Houston), a young man (Owen Wilson) who believes that Zissou might be his father, and a very pregnant journalist (Cate Blanchett). There’s also a frequently topless script girl, and a Brazilian safety expert who spends much of the film singing David Bowie songs in Portuguese.
The Alamo Drafthouse will be serving fish and chips during today’s Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Dinner. Each patron will receive a Team Zissou-issue red knit cap (you’re on your own for the matching Speedo). The fantastic underwater world that Anderson so lovingly brings to life should be seen on the big screen, so don’t lose this chance. 7:30 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park, 531 South Mason Road. For information, call 281-492-6900 or visit www.drafthouse.com.
