The London Royal Ballet’s
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland screens in select movie theaters for a one-day-only live broadcast. Choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, the theatrical ballet is based on Lewis Carroll’s cherished story of a young girl’s descent into a fantastical world. We’ll meet an array of charming and devilish characters in Wheeldon’s retelling — including the inquisitive Alice (Lauren Cuthbertson), the delightfully venomous Queen of Hearts (Zenaida Yanowsky) and the other colorful characters from Carroll’s classic tale.
Wheeldon’s choreography is comedic in nature yet still earns a place for itself in the Royal Ballet’s classical repertoire with a sweeping waltz and an exuberant pas de deux. Joby Talbot’s whimsical score and Tony award-winning Bob Crowley’s fanciful costume and set design bring the ever curious and curiouser atmosphere of Wonderland.
The ballet opens in Oxford in 1862 with Alice and her family at a party alongside Lewis Carroll (Edward Watson). When Carroll is transformed into the White Rabbit in a feat of magic and disappears into his camera bag, the eager Alice follows him and the three-and-a-half-hour-long adventure begins.
This broadcast includes a behind-the-scenes look at the Royal Opera House and exclusive interviews with artists from The Royal Ballet. 7 p.m. Various locations including Edwards Marq*E Stadium 23 IMAX, 7620 Katy Freeway. For information, visit fathomevents.com. $18.
