Mariachi Invitational

Six groups take turns trying to win over the audience and the judges during this year’s Mariachi Invitational, performing classics of the often dramatic, often lively music. At the end of Saturday’s preliminary session, the semi-finalists are chosen. They’ll face off during Sunday’s Go Tejano Day festivities, with the two finalists competing between the La Arrolladora Banda el Limon and La Leyenda performances. (For a bit of extra luck, competing groups might take a hint from last year’s two semi-finalists and wear red. The 2010 winner, San Antonio’s Mariachi Las Alteñas, and first runner-up, Laredo’s Mariachi Los Arrieros, both wore deep burgundy.) See the Invitational at 6 p.m. Saturday. Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas. $22.50 to $32.50. See the semi-finals at 11 a.m. The Hideout, 1 Reliant Park. $7. See the finals at 3:45 p.m. RodeoHouston, 1 Reliant Park. $18 to $300. Support the independent voice of Houston and help keep the future of Houston Press free.

Keep the Houston Press Free... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Houston with no paywalls.
