Six groups take turns trying to win over the audience and the judges during this years Mariachi Invitational, performing classics of the often dramatic, often lively music. At the end of Saturdays preliminary session, the semi-finalists are chosen. Theyll face off during Sundays Go Tejano Day festivities, with the two finalists competing between the La Arrolladora Banda el Limon and La Leyenda performances. (For a bit of extra luck, competing groups might take a hint from last years two semi-finalists and wear red. The 2010 winner, San Antonios Mariachi Las Alteñas, and first runner-up, Laredos Mariachi Los Arrieros, both wore deep burgundy.) See the Invitational at 6 p.m. Saturday. Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas. $22.50 to $32.50. See the semi-finals at 11 a.m. The Hideout, 1 Reliant Park. $7. See the finals at 3:45 p.m. RodeoHouston, 1 Reliant Park. $18 to $300. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
