Carrie disappears one night, leaving her five-year-old daughter and everything she owns behind with no clue as to where she’s gone or why. At least that’s the story her husband, Jared, is telling his neighbors in Mette Ivie Harrison’s new novel The Bishop’s Wife. The story sounds improbable to the Mormon bishop he turns to for help. It sounds impossible to Linda, the bishop’s wife, who, like her husband, is tasked with offering comfort and support to church members. Jared presents himself as an abandoned husband, left to take care of a young daughter by his irresponsible wife. Linda thinks he’s a murderer.
