MFAH Family Flicks: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T

If you're unfamiliar with the only feature film written by the one and only Dr. Seuss, you're forgiven. He was never a fan of how The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T turned out and even omitted it from his autobiography. Nonetheless, the film has remained a cult classic thanks to the Seuss connection and the fact that it is a truly daring and visually exciting musical. Directed by Roy Rowland with lyrics by Dr. Seuss and an Oscar-nominated score, the film follows a boy named Bart who doesn't like taking piano lessons from his mean teacher, Dr. Terwilliker. One night he dreams he's been transported to a surreal fantasy world where Dr. T rules with an iron fist and plans to build a piano so large it requires 500 enslaved boys to play it for his grand concert. The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is a somewhat dark film in the vein of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but the sets and songs are incredible. There are some brilliant fantasy works that just get overlooked through a combination of factors, and Dr. T ranks high among them.
