It sounds a bit like a reality competition show along the lines of American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance: From dozens of submissions, Mildred's Umbrella has chosen a "final four" plays for its Fresh Ink series, meaning they will be performed as staged readings over the course of the year. One will go on to become a full production. And the audience will choose which will go on to become Houston's Favorite New Play (well, not really, but kind of).
According to a release, after each reading, a talkback will take place in which the audience offers up criticism and suggestions to the playwright, director and cast. Mildred's Umbrella will use the feedback to determine which play will go on to become a fully staged production.
Round one of the Fresh Ink series will feature Galaxy Blink by Oregon playwright Francesca Sanders. The reading, which will take place at Spacetaker on August 15, will be directed by Mildred's Umbrella Artistic Director Jennifer Decker and will feature Jon Harvey, Rod Todd and Michelle Edwards. The reading will be in collaboration with Wordsmyth Theater, which actually found the play, according to the release.
The other readings will take place in October, January and April.
