Mummies, Magic and Medicine in Ancient Egypt

The new Hall of Ancient Egypt at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is simply amazing. Helping to bring the story of the pharaohs to life is Dr. Bob Brier, who presents a talk on Mummies, Magic and Medicine in Ancient Egypt. Brier is one of the world's leading Egyptologists, especially in the realm of mummification. Not only has he examined famous mummies such as Tutankhamen and Ramses the Great, he was also the first person in the modern world to mummify a corpse using Egyptian techniques. He'll walk an audience through the beginning of the elaborate and fascinating burial rituals, focusing on both the magical meanings and the purely biological aspects. Ancient Egyptians mixed practical medicine with religion, with priests also serving as doctors and temples doubling as hospitals. According to Brier's Ancient Egyptian Magic, the meshing of non-magical healing for injuries like crocodile bites lies side by side in records with spiritual remedies for ailments like fever.
