The Boys Season 5 on Amazon Credit: Prime Video

This week’s streaming lineup is about as varied as the options rolling past you at a revolving sushi restaurant. Just when you think you’ve settled on the spicy tuna roll, a Shaggy Dog slides into view and suddenly you’re rethinking everything. That is very much the case this week, with a superhero drama that remains one of the most unhinged shows on television, a razor-sharp comedy that keeps finding deeper emotional resonance, and a nostalgic favorite returning for a limited run that fans hope hits just as hard as it did the first time.

The Boys – Season 5 on Amazon Prime

The thing about The Boys is that it has never been a show about subtlety, and that is exactly why it continues to work, even this deep into its run. The series picks up with a world that feels more fractured than ever, and with Homelander inching closer and closer to absolute power. That thin line between hero and villain has, at this point, all but disappeared.

In a way, it almost makes you think about how superhero storytelling has evolved over the years. You go back to something like Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, where Superman is dealing with nuclear weapons in a way that honestly deserves a rewatch just for how wild it is. But what The Boys does is take that idea of power and push it to a much darker and more grounded extreme.

What started as a subversive take on superhero culture has now evolved into something that feels even more reflective of the real world, just with a sharper edge. Billy Butcher is running out of time and options and continues to push himself to the brink, while the rest of the crew is forced to deal with consequences that feel heavier than ever. This show takes big swings. It leans into chaos. And it never promises safety for anyone, which is part of what keeps it so compelling.

The Boys season five is streaming on Amazon Prime this week.

Hacks – Season 5 on HBO MAX.

Hacks is one of those shows where the comedy, the ambition, and the constant reinvention of its characters are what give it staying power. Jean Smart, who has racked up awards for her performance as Deborah Vance, continues to be the centerpiece here, playing a performer who refuses to fade quietly into the background. This season leans even more into the drama underneath the jokes, and honestly that is what makes the comedy hit harder. Comedy works best when it is rooted in truth, and Hacks understands that. The writing has always been the anchor of the show, and the dynamic between Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder is still what keeps everything feeling fresh.

Hacks starts streaming this week on HBO MAX.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair – Hulu/Disney+

Malcolm in the Middle, which is back with a limited series revival.

This was one of the more escapable single-camera sitcoms of the early 2000s, and a show that gave us not just Frankie Muniz, but Bryan Cranston in that post-Seinfeld window before Breaking Bad. Now it returns with a four-episode special titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.

The series follows an adult Malcolm who has been avoiding his family but is pulled back into the chaos for Hal and Lois’ 40th wedding anniversary. We have seen revivals before with Will & Grace, with Roseanne, and even with Frasier, and they all come with varying degrees of success. There is always a little bit of hesitation going in. But Malcolm in the Middle was a show that felt ahead of its time. It embraced family dysfunction without trying to smooth everything over, and that is a big reason why it still connects.

Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek return as Hal and Lois, along with Malcolm, Reese, and Francis, with one notable change as Caleb Ellsworth Clark steps in as Dewey, replacing Erik Per Sullivan, who stepped away from acting years ago.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair starts streaming this week on Hulu and Disney Plus.
