Podcast: Scarlett Johansson Impresses in Under the Skin and Captain America: The Winter Soldier

On this week's Voice Film Club podcast, it's all about Scarlett Johansson, who has two movies coming out this week at opposite ends of the commercial spectrum: Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin and Anthony and Joe Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In the words of Voice film editor Alan Scherstuhl, "This week, Scarlett Johansson weirdly embodies the great, ridiculous conundrum...of actresses of her generation."

Starting the Under the Skin discussion is Voice film critic Stephanie Zacharek, an over-the-moon fan of the film: "I know it's going to be one of my favorite movies of the whole year," she says. "I find it completely mesmerizing and hypnotic and strange." L.A. Weekly film critic Amy Nicholson is a bit more conflicted, but confesses to an admiration for Johansson's performance: "She [has] this amazing walk. It's like watching a panther that's just sort of bored." Scherstuhl, for his part, reverently calls the film "curious" and "elliptical."

Of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nicholson, adding to her review, says the following: "To date, the only [Marvel film] I've ever really, really liked was Thor. And this one beat the first Thor to me." The film also exceeded Scherstuhl's expectations; finding himself particularly surprised by how much the movie advances the larger Marvel-movie storyline, Scherstuhl says: "This feels almost like the season-ender of all these Marvel comic-book movies...Actual big things happen."

The critics close out with some brief recommendations: Zacharek reinforces her Under the Skin love; Scherstuhl mentions the found-footage thriller Alien Abduction and the documentary The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden; and Nicholson highlights another documentary, The Unknown Known, which she describes as "a very interesting...head-to-head" between filmmaker (Errol Morris) and subject (Donald Rumsfeld).
