Pop Rocks: Alternatives During the Most Boring Time of the Year

Music

This might be one of the few areas of entertainment that is active in the summer, but so much of it is at festivals, sometimes hundreds of miles from home (like Pitchfork or Lollapalooza or the Gathering of the Juggalos -- you know you wanna). And if you are living in Houston, you will struggle to find enough options to keep you entertained on the regular.

Recommended Alternatives: See some local music. You might be surprised just how good local musicians are and it gives you an excuse to hang out in bar without seeming like an alcoholic.

Sports

World Cup will be over soon and then we are left with baseball, but these are the dog days of the season well before the pennant races begin. By the time the end of September rolls around, all four major sports (plus soccer) will be rolling, but until then, you'll be hard pressed to find much worth watching in the way of spectator sports.

Recommended Alternatives: Play some sports yourself. Listen up, chubby, this is the time to shed some weight before the holidays set in and there isn't a more entertaining way to do it than through sports. So, go shoot some hoops or toss a ball around. You'll be healthier and happier for it.

Holidays

Unless you are really into Senior Citizens Day, the holidays available to you after July 4 and before September 1 (Labor Day in 2014) are non-existent. That means no three day weekends or "official" days off for nearly two months. That's a pretty tough stretch.

Recommended Alternatives: Go on vacation. Let's face it, this is one of the reasons everyone does it at this time. Join the crowd and take some time off.
