There are lots of big-name actors in RED Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker, Karl Urban, Richard Dreyfuss and Bruce Willis. But theres another one you should keep an eye out for: Ernest Borgnine, who plays the records keeper. Young moviegoers might know Borgnine as the voice of Mermaid Man on SpongeBob Square Pants or may have caught reruns of his 1960s television series McHales Navy. But Borgnine had a wonderful film career before going on the boob tube, including an Academy Award-winning performance in the 1955 film Marty. Now in his mid-nineties, Borgnine plays a minor role in RED, unfortunately. We would have liked to see more of the old workhorse actor on screen.
Anyway, back to RED and all those other stars the film casts Willis, Mirren and Morgan as retired spies who get sucked back into a mission when the members of their team start turning up dead. Older and out of the espionage game for a while, the team members still have chops and are classified as retired, extremely dangerous, hence the name of the movie. Theyre all also itching to get back in action and relish the idea of shooting bad guys once again. Mirrens character especially shows a delight in getting her hands dirty (she was the groups wet works expert). We would suggest listing her under REED, as in retired, extremely, extremely dangerous.
Have fun while Willis and the other old dogs teach the new pups a few tricks. Santikos Silverado is screening the movie today for free at 7 p.m. 24720 State Highway 249. For information, call 281-290-0077 or visit www.santikos.com.
