Rock Romano at d.m. allison Full of Color and Light

Last night the d.m. allison gallery previewed its new exhibition of works by Rock Romano AKA "Dr. Rockit." The show, which officially opens Saturday, features a large collection by the artist and musician. Many know Romano as being a staple in the Houston blues community. During the '60s, Romano was a part of the garage band The Sixpentz, but like many musicians, he also found a way to express himself through other creative outlets; for Romano this was and still is painting.

The works on display are many and almost became dizzying after a while. Romano's paintings, all acrylic, take cues from both the psychedelic and abstract schools of art. His color palate reminds of Peter Max or John Van Hamersveld, bright colors often falling on the same side of the color spectrum but complimenting each other nonetheless. His form, however, is of pure abstraction.

In a few of his works, such as "Gifts By the Water" and "Bright Lights Big City," there are traces of surrealism. In the latter, a chaotic cityscape can almost be discerned. Figures rush through a frenzy of kaleidoscopic colors, while smoke stacks puff in the far distance. While other paintings capture less of an image and more of a feeling.

In "Thick as Thieves," Romano fattens his stroke up and darkens his color palate. Rich red and green and blue strokes fill the canvas giving almost an ominous sense; a different experience from the majority of the collection.

There are many paintings on display and by the back room some of the images seem to blend in with one another. The pieces that stuck out, however, are masterful and worth viewing. A plus side is that Roman's work is very reasonably priced and would brighten up any room they are placed in.

Rock Romano AKA "Dr. Rockit" opens Saturday, August 10, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition is on view August 6 - thru August 24, 2013.
