Spring has sprung, and with it a whole new crop of seasonal beauty and fashion lines. It's been a very strenuous month of shopping, facials, and beauty counter makeovers, but it's finally time to present the top contenders for the season.
Spring 2015 Best in Beauty
Back in January Clarins hosted an in-store event at Macy's at The Galleria, where makeup artist Dayan Herrera gave us the lowdown on the latest in the French brand's skincare lines and a peek at their Spring 2015 color cosmetics. After a month of testing the sample products they provided (and repurchasing about half), the top products from their Spring 2015 are:
• Instant Light Lip Balm Perfector ($23): Similar to their Natural Lip Perfector, but with a traditional stick delivery rather than the sponge-tip applicator from the original that tends to get a little mildew over time. • New Generation Everlasting Foundation SPF 15 ($40): The price tag on this medium-coverage, 18-hour formula is unbeatable. That it comes in fourteen shades is even sweeter. • Crayon Khol in Intense Green ($25): "Green is the new black," according to Clarins, and their double-sided Khol pencil gives you the option to wash the color out to sheer or build intensity. The built-in smudge brush is worth the price tag--sturdy, and should last the life of the tool. • Joli Rouge Perfect Shine Lipstick ($27) in Coral Dahlia: The most wearable orange lipstick you'll find this season, in a shiny, moisturizing, formula that is halfway between a lipstick and lipgloss.
It's Houston, so sunscreen should be on your radar year-round, especially with our days getting longer and longer. Clarins' UV Plus Anti-Pollution in SPF 50 is the ultimate in daily sunscreen. Moisturizing? Check. Goes on smooth and clear? Check. Wears well under makeup, or alone? Check. And the anti-pollution aspect is really great for city-dwellers in particular. If you've been trying to up your man's skincare game, this sunscreen is a good place to start.
P.S. Did you know that Houston has its very own Clarins spa at the Four Seasons Hotel? Yeah--get there.
The second pick for skin and make up isn't so much a spring line as a new line released this spring. The new daily cleansers from cult mud mask makers at Glamglow are getting rave reviews all over the internet for their powerful-but-gentle, effective results. The Supercleanse Daily Clearing Cleanser and the Thirstycleanse Daily Treatment are $39 each, and come in sturdy packaging with a pump dispenser. If you love their masks, the daily cleansers are worth a try. Shop these online, or at Sephora.
Makeup genius Mercier just released her latest line of lip colors--for under $30. The new Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour is about two years behind similar products from Tom Ford and Hourglass, but it's got every bit as much pigment and tenacity as its higher-priced counterparts. You'll want to play with these first, to decide whether you like the texture--head straight to the Laura Mercier counter at your favorite department store.

Spring 2015 Best in Fashion
The best thing about Spring 2015 is the 1970s--everything is coming back! Hippie chic, rocker chic--just be chic, okay? Think Free People at The Galleria, Emerson Rose on West 19th, and for jewelry, the natural stones wrapped in leather and wire from Dove & The Whale.

So maybe a $400 lavender cropped leather moto jacket from Free People is an outrageous splurge, but wouldn't it be nice? How about a $400 lace trench coat that is giving serious Cher-at-Easter-Brunch-Realness? Free People has literally an entire category of statement jackets to choose from, and even though Houstonians don't find much need for a jacket after April, a great coat is just too hard to resist. When shopping, think about finding a piece you can wear again in the fall to get the most bang for your buck.
Honorable Mention: H&M at The Galleria
The best part about spring fashion in Houston this year is we get to dip our toes into everything for less, now that H&M at The Galleria has arrived. After waiting many weeks for the insane crowds to die down, the first visit is still a blur of waiting room lines. (That seven garment limit is a killer.) How many dresses can you get for less than $100? The answer that time was five, but a girl has to have goals.
