“The Big Show”

If recent reports from (envious) national media outlets are to be believed, Houston is weathering this recession well. Actually, it’s thriving — people are smiling and, more importantly, spending. This is great news for all, but especially for local emerging artists, some 500 of whom submitted works for consideration for the annual “Big Show” at Lawndale Art Center. Starting today, the best of the bunch will be displayed (last year 117 works by 86 artists made the cut) and the winners announced. Expect painting, sculpture, video art, installations, drawings and everything in between. Opening reception today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through August 9. 4912 Main. For information, call 713-528-5858 or visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org. Free.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: July 11. Continues through Aug. 9, 2008
