The Houston Grand Opera-commissioned song cycle, Pieces of 9/11, Memories from Houston, kicked off this weekend's 9/11 tenth anniversary retrospectives at Hermann Square in front of city hall Friday. Present at the event were Mayor Annise Parker, city council members and many of Houston's police officers and firefighters.
Members of the HGO performed songs written by Gene Scheer and composed by Jake Heggie, which are infusions of stories from Houstonians affected by 9/11 and the authors' own experiences of what happened that day.
There will be a 7 p.m. performance of Pieces of 9/11, Memories from Houston, Friday, Sept. 9 at Discovery Green. A 7:30 p.m. performance will be held Saturday, September 10 at the Arab American Cultural Center, 10555 Stancliff Road.
Performances can also be seen at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Sunday, September 11, at Rothko Chapel, 3900 Yupon Street.
