Weird Weekly Video: A Purple Mouth Sings Billy Joel

Video artist Eileen Maxson creates little curiosities that seem to pop out of nowhere with no explanation. They're the kind of odd little snippets you might catch while switching channels (or searching YouTube). But Maxson's work is almost disturbingly hypnotic. Her videos are like little bits of evidence posted on the web by a ghost who wants to lead us to a crime scene. In the above video Cached Curses, a purple, voice-distorted mouth takes over Maxson's face to sing Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." It's Maxson's most recent video, posted in June of this year. The UH grad and onetime Houston resident is now based in Amsterdam.

After the jump, check out Maxson's 2006 piece, Tonight Reprise, in which Maxson gives a press conference for news cameras, but when she opens her mouth, out come the lyrics to a Smashing Pumpkins song.
