    Visitors to Houston Botanic Garden this fall will encounter gigantic sculptures of butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, and bees – some as tall as 12 feet high – as “Glass in Flight” lands in Houston for a six-month stay, beginning the weekend of Oct. 20-22.     Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community lasting for more than 90 years. Images of the still-standing small houses of worship, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective.     'Xu Bing: Word Alchemy' assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints, videos, drawings, installations, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting, but the canons of contemporary art.     Buffalo Soldiers National Museum’s new rotating exhibition, The Blue Helmets in Action, focuses on the 93rd Infantry Division, the first African American combat division to be activated during World War II. The purpose of the exhibition is to educate visitors about this historically overlooked Army division.
