Houston audiences will have a chance to see Kissless: The Musical, a new work by Chance McClain, a few weeks before it premieres at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Though NYMF entrants are normally not allowed to preview their shows 60 days before the New York performances, Houston Family Arts Center, which is producing the show, obtained a special waiver to do so because of the distance between Houston and New York, HFAC Executive Director Bob Clark said. NYMF's rule applies to most shows because they are cast and produced in New York, and previews there could steal audiences from the festival, Clark explained.
Of course, mounting a show costs money. A lot of it. And even though HFAC has already raised around 60 percent of the roughly $100,000 needed to send the cast and crew of 40 people to New York for 13 days, HFAC's still got a few fundraisers planned, including ticketed receptions, a silent auction and a September 8 golf tournament. The silent auction will take place at the September 11 show, and receptions will be held on both September 11 and September 18. All the proceeds from ticket sales, receptions and the silent auction will fund the company's New York excursion.
Clark said if the shows and receptions sell out, HFAC will hit its fundraising goal.
As previously reported by Art Attack, the cast of Kissless: The Musical is made up mostly of local teenagers, a first for the NYMF, which usually casts productions out of New York.
The show is written by Houston's own Chance McClain, who co-authored the viral "Yao Ming Song" a few years back. The musical comedy concerns two unlikely companions forced to live together for a summer and the dismay their relationship causes their friends and family. The colorful cast of characters includes "Abercrombie jocks, misfit Goths, brainy nerds and backwards rednecks," according to a release.
The New York Musical Theatre Festival is now in its eighth year and has debuted such works as Next To Normal, which went on to win three Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize.
Houston previews will take place Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at The Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Road in Cypress.
