Just as Skyfall is about to see its U.S. release, it's also about time that we should consider the fact that Daniel Craig is probably close to retiring the role of James Bond. So with that in mind, we should consider the possibilities. We could see Bond in his earlier years and have a younger version...or go with the typical older, more mature, but still handsome Bond as we've seen in...Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan or even Daniel Craig. Now maybe it's because I'm from a younger generation, but I think we need a fresh look for Bond.
There was even a time when I thought Jude Law would have made the best Bond...luckily that time has passed. But after reading a recent article in Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Bond film, I started to think about some of the guys I've seen and thought could and should be in line to play the next James Bond...so here they are.
BRITISH BOND NO. 1: All right...so readers of my Many Shades of Christian Grey article might think I am a little biased here, but I'm going to have to go with yummy British hunk Alex Pettyfer again for this one.
Why him? Well, some of the same reasons as before. That sexy smile, the confident, cocky yet appealing attitude...not to mention those beautiful "Greek God" looks of his. Also in his favor: already British, well-spoken, charismatic. Yes, he is 22, but he looks older than that...so he could pass for a mid- to late-twenties version of 007. And although in reality he seems too much of a sweetheart to deserve the title Ladies Man, he would make a believable one onscreen.
AUSTRALIAN BOND: Another blond hunk who some bloggers and I (semi) believe could tackle the role is Chris Hemsworth. The 28-year-old Australian actor already plays another action hero, Thor. Plus he's tall, built, sexy...(not really my type, but sexy to a majority). Now, the only problem I foresee is believability. As far as playing a well-educated, well-spoken, believable spy. Not so sure. Also, his Aussie accent is pretty thick...but that's why it's called acting, I suppose.
BRITISH BOND NO. 2: A second British choice could be 29-year-old Henry Cavill. He was considered for the role at one point and then dropped, but I can't understand why. Who would not believe that this sexy British import has both the smarts and the sex appeal to play the famous spy? He's well-spoken, intelligent...with a deep voice and soft British accent. Who couldn't hear him uttering the famous words, "Bond...James Bond." And I think it's safe to say Cavill is the kind of guy that could get any woman he wanted.
AMERICAN BOND: The only American on my list is blue-eyed cutie Matt Bomer. This 35-year-old actor has already had some practice for the role as semi-spy/con man Neal Caffrey on the popular TV series White Collar. And I could see him delivering some crafty one-liners, which is a must for anyone who wants to play Bond. And as Henry Cavill, to whom he looks strikingly similar, he has that chiseled, beautiful look, a nice build and the smarts, and could easily be believed as a charismatic playboy. Now he may not be serious-looking enough. A little bit too smiley. James Bond has always been more of a brooding type. A little too serious despite all his charisma. Also not in Bomer's favor...his all-American accent. I have a feeling this former Texan turned New Yorker would need some serious British accent training.
GERMAN BOND: Germany's own Michael Fassbender. Don't know what it is about this guy, but he can even make a robot appealing (David in Prometheus). He is tall, dark and handsome...with a nice, mysterious smile and a look of distinction and refinement. Believable as a spy? Definitely. And the 35-year-old actor has already proven that he has nothing to be ashamed about...so I think it's safe to say that he would be believable as a charismatic lover of the ladies.
BRITISH BOND No. 3: Last but DEFINITELY not least...former Batman Christian Bale. The 39-year-old Welsh hunk recently retired the black cape, so he might have plenty of time to take on a few Bond films. Another plus: He's a Brit. Although his Wales accent is very thick...he'd have to lighten it up a bit. He's well-spoken, tall, dark. Handsome? Let's put it this way...I've had a crush on this one since he was dancing around in Newsies...Flash-forward 15 years later and he still has the same effect on me. So I think it's safe to say that as far as the charismatic aspect of Bond goes, Bale's got it covered.
With that said, I'm not saying I'm about to start the "Bale for Bond" campaign...nor am I fully Team Pettyfer. Honestly, I don't have a top pick. Any of these handsome hotties would make a perfect Bond, depending on the route Hollywood decides to take. All I know is that Daniel Craig is sure to be retiring soon, so hopefully these guys will be kept in mind. Besides, I can't think of a better way for Hollywood to get a younger, hipster type of crowd out to see a Bond film.
If you've got a pick, let us know.
