It's not too late to learn how to make a great Thanksgiving meal. Sur la Table will host several Thanksgiving cooking classes centered around recipes from the Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten. On Sunday, November 24, the Houston River Oaks location will host a class from 2:30-5:30 p.m. for $95 per person. Each guest will also receive a copy of Ina Garten's cookbook, "Barefoot Contessa Foolproof: Recipes You Can Trust." The menu includes roasted butternut squash salad with warm-cider vinaigrette, roast turkey with truffle butter, mashed potatoes with homemade gravy and a sweet pumpkin banana mousse tart. If you don't know what to make for Thanksgiving yet, attend this class and walk away with recipes for the big day on Thursday.
Once Thanksgiving is over, Christmas celebrations and preparations are in full swing. Learn how to make a truly Southern meal at Central Market on Monday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. This hands-on workshop class is taught by Carrie Morey, owner of Callie's Charleston Biscuits and author of "Callie's Biscuits & Southern Traditions: Heirloom Recipes from Our Family Kitchen." During the $55 class, you will learn how to make buttermilk black pepper biscuits, roasted pimento cheese chicken, roasted bacon Brussels sprouts and a cup a' cobbler, all of which are perfect recipes to make for friends and family this holiday season.
If you were unable to attend the International Risotto Festival on November 10, you still have the opportunity to enjoy the winning risotto dish, from Quattro's Chef Maurizio Ferrarese. The saffron Milanese risotto with veal osso bucco, bone marrow and porcini, "Marchesi-style," is available on the Quattro menu until December 9. Chef Ferrarese beat a number of Houston chefs in the International Risotto Festival, so don't dilly dally and get to Quattro before it's gone.
On Tuesday, December 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., Lucky Dog Rescue hosts the 6th Annual Christmas "Tail" Gingerbread Doghouse Contest and Auction at the Royal Sonseta Hotel Houston. Enjoy complimentary cocktails and snacks while gazing at the outstanding gingerbread doghouses on display for auction created by a variety of Houston chefs. All donations, including the $25 suggested donation at the door, will benefit Lucky Dog Rescue. Children are allowed into the event free of charge.

Revival Market will host a book signing and dinner with the owners of Fatted Calf Charcuterie in San Francisco, Taylor Boetticher and Toponia Miller. Both are co-authors of the cookbook, "In the Charcuterie: The Fatted Calf's Guide to Making Sausage, Salumi, Pates, Roasts, Confits and Other Meats." Pre-order the book from Revival Market for $40. The book signing lasts from 5-6 p.m. and has no entrance fee. The dinner is currently sold out, but Revival Market can put you on the wait-list. The dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. with cocktails. Chefs Ryan Pera and Adam Dorris will prepare the menu with recipes from the cookbook. Hors d' oeuvres include chicken liver mousse crostini, oxtail terrine, and duck and lemongrass sausage. The first course includes creselle and chanterelle in game bird broth, 5-spice baby back ribs, bread and lardo, and a winter salad with bacon. The second course includes goat shoulder Birria, brasato al midolo, celery remoulade and fagioli all'Uccelletto. Dessert options include an olive oil polenta cake with thyme honey and an old-fashioned apple cobbler. Tickets for the dinner cost $125 ($35 deposit is required) and include a copy of the cookbook. BYOB is encouraged. If you can't get tickets to the dinner, make sure you get a cookbook during the signing -- you'll be able to make these dishes whenever you want!
