We appreciate our readers' suggestions. Hey, we can't think of all this stuff on our own. So, last week, when reader Shayne suggested Doritos Nacho Cheese Chips with Bolla Bardolino, we decided to try it. The fact that the reader said it sounded gross but was a good pairing didn't exactly make us want to run out and get it. But we are willing to suffer to bring you, our readers, the best in wine and junk food. Luckily, Shayne was right. It was a good pairing.
Bolla Bardolino wasn't that easy to find, which was strange for a fairly common wine. We saw other types of Bolla wine but not the Bardolino. Not to worry, though. We always get our wine. We finally found it in the big-bottle section of Spec's -- 1.5 liters for about $10. The wine is exactly what you would expect from a cheap red wine: light and fruity, with a peppery bite at the end. It reminded us of the first bottle of Yellow Tail we bought in college.
But, once you add in the Doritos Nacho Cheese chips, it's a whole different story.
The greasy cheesiness miraculously mellowed out the harshness of the wine. We read recently that cheese makes cheap red wine taste better. While we don't think the bright-orange powder necessarily counts as real cheese, it does have that cheesy effect. To be honest, we couldn't stop crunching and sipping. All we needed was the pizza Bolla recommended on the wine label, and we would've had a party.
Next time we throw a party, we may opt for a cheap jug of Bolla Bardolino and expensive cheese. Or, we may just stick with cheap wine and cheap Doritos. Hey, we never said we weren't cheap dates.
