The Place: Saint Dane's Bar & Grille
502 Elgin St.
The Hours: Monday through Friday, 3-7 p.m.
The Deals: Domestic pints are $2, wells are $3. Also daily specials on food and drinks, like half-price wraps on Wednesdays and 25 cent wings on Thursdays.
The Scene: Saint Dane's happy hour might be the most boring happy hour in Houston.
And we're not talking "boring" like "empty-boring." We've been to those. Like the time we showed up for happy hour at Firkin and Phoenix for happy hour. The place was completely empty except a couple bartenders counting money and talking about fantasy football.
We've been to empty happy hours that weren't so boring, too. Like the afternoon we spent at Leon's Lounge drinking whiskey. Not many people there, but a good time.
But Saint Dane's is a completely different breed. The bar, located in Midtown at Elgin and Smith streets, is always packed.
So when we say boring, we mean it in the best possible way.

Saint Dane's is kind of small inside -- there is an attached patio with what looks like a bedsheet that serves as a projection screen -- but people always seem to spill out of the open air bar into the parking lot. (Parking availability is one negative at Saint Dane's.)
Despite the large crowds, however, at least on Wednesday night during happy hour, the place was calm. A good mix of younger and older people, women and men, sat at tables and drank and talked and laughed. No obnoxious music. No meat market. No high fives.
Considering we were in Midtown, it was almost eerie. (The bartender told us that on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for $1 tacos and 25 cent wings, the crowd cranks it up a notch but the scene remains the same.)
So, with nothing else to do or observe, we simply drank our beer and enjoyed some conversation.
