The Bakery Café in Aransas Pass was founded in 1929. Its claim to fame is chicken-fried steak, but I was a lot more impressed with the hamburgers. Ask for a "homemade burger," and you get a third-pound hand-formed patty cooked to your liking. I sampled one that was topped with cheese and a fried egg -- it was excellent.
Aransas Pass, once known as the "Shrimp Capital of Texas," has changed its nickname to "Saltwater Haven," because there aren't so many shrimp boats there anymore. They still call their annual civic festival Shrimporee though. The first time I went to that festival, I expected to see a lot of fresh shrimp cooking. Unfortunately, what I found was a whole lot of turkey legs and funnel cakes.
