: Zydeco Louisiana Diner, 1119 Pease, 713-759-2001
What $13 gets you: More than enough to leave you happily burping for hours. The day I visited I had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, cornbread and sweet tea. One friend tried the chicken fricassee, another friend tried the shrimp po’boy. For each of us the total came to around $11.
Recommended: Yeah, you right. This is gumbo- gatermouth-jambalaya Louisiana style cooking. My fried chicken was a little spicier than most, with a razor thin crust. I’ve had the pork chops here and they were also spiced up. They weren’t burn-your-mouth hot, but spiced up just enough to make it interesting.
Bonus point: The restaurant’s sound system is always blasting something cool, from old R&B, to Zydeco (duh!), to banging blues.
Insider tip: They are only open for lunch. Get there before 1 p.m. if you want a full selection. Every day there are a couple of specials (Thursdays is pork chops, for example); there’s always baked chicken, gumbo, seafood and a host of other Cajun cooking staples. – Olivia Flores Alvarez
