Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man killed while he and his wife were watching fireworks in their front yard shortly after midnight on Thursday.
Javier Suarez Rivera, 43, and family members had gathered to celebrate New Year's Eve at his home in the 800 block of Eastlake Street. At midnight, Rivera and his wife stepped outside and walked to the edge of their driveway to watch nearby fireworks, according to a release issued by the Houston Police Department. Rivera suddenly collapsed. Investigators believe he was hit by a stray bullet.
Rivera's wife told KHOU that she never heard a gunshot. Rivera fell back onto the lawn, shot in the head. Neighbors called 911 and tried to help Rivera while they waited. The Houston Fire Department pronounced Rivera dead at the scene.
The fireworks were not being launched in the immediate area, according to the release. Investigators believe that Rivera was hit by celebratory gunfire.
