Houston Baptist University took another step towards becoming a football program today by naming a head coach.

He is Vic Shealy, who most recently was defensive coordinator at Kansas, a team that went winless in conference play and whose staff was thus replaced.

Shealy also has coached at Richmond, UNLV, Air Force, Austin Peay State, Mars Hill College and was a graduate assistant at Baylor.

"I am especially encouraged by Coach Shealy's commitment not only to football, but to the academic and spiritual mission of Houston Baptist University," HBU president Robert Sloan Jr. said. "His outstanding coaching career and his commitment to college football will be a great asset in recruiting student-athletes and coaches for our football program, and I believe Coach Shealy will provide great leadership both on and off the playing field as HBU's first football coach."

The Huskies will begin playing football in 2014; they'll be in the FCS's Southland Conference, playing schools like Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Lamar University.
