An unnamed suspect is in the hospital but expected to live after being shot by two Houston police officers at the classiest place possible for a shootout, a Gulf Freeway adult-video store.

It is not known if any dildoes or edible underwear or butt plugs were harmed in the event, which took place about 2:20 a.m. this morning.

Officers M.A. De La Cerda and D.A. Morelli were on duty and patrolling the area near the store, in the 10500 block of Gulf Freeway. HPD says they noticed a man enter the establishment "in a suspicious manner" and "determined the suspect had entered the business armed with a shotgun."

Once inside, he demanded money from a safe, but the store employee -- surely someone who, working the graveyard shift at a Gulf Freeway adult store, didn't need such aggravation -- could not open it. He instead opened the cash register and told the man he could take what was inside.

For his cooperative attitude he got whacked on the back of the head with the shotgun.

"Officers De La Cerda and Morelli, who had made their way back to the business, opened the glass door and saw the suspect behind the counter with the shotgun," HPD says. "Fearing for their safety, both officers discharged their duty weapons, striking the suspect."

He is in Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.

De La Cerda joined HPD in February 2007; Morelli in November 2006.

"As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings occurring in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office," HPD says.
