A 4-year-old girl was trampled to death by a horse. Authorities do not suspect foul play.

Young Samantha Sillero and her mother were out riding their family horse on Sunday morning at a rodeo arena along the 13700 block of Karalas Road in south Houston. It started out, we assume, as a pleasant family outing.

But as the two women rode through the arena's parking lot, their horse started acting strange.

Police say the beast got spooked in the parking lot, surrounded by other people and other horses, and reared up, throwing Sillero and her mom to the ground. The horse then stepped on the girl, police say.

Both mother and child were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared Sillero dead. The mother was expected to recover from her injuries.

According to police, "investigators examined the stables where the horse was being kept and found the horse to be temperamental, but rideable."

So far, no charges have been filed.
