You'd never know Ike is coming our way if you're in Midtown -- it's a pleasant day, people are out strolling or walking their dogs, there's gas to be had with no lines and even Spec's isn't that crowded.
Go a couple of blocks into downtown, though, and it's pretty much a ghost town.
Anyone evacuating from Houston proper (as opposed to the coast -- what the hell are you still doing there?), now's the time. The highways are empty. You could probably make Austin in three hours.
Things will change rapidly enough once Ike comes, of course, but for now people seem to be enjoying the day off.
Which we guess they should, if they're going to be facing the possibility of two weeks without electricity.
