A 16-year-old boy says he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend, Houston police say, and he faces negligent homicide charges.
The victim, Waddieonne Griffin, 16, was standing with the boy -- unidentified because he is a minor -- outside his residence in the 4900 block of Alvin shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, police say.
Initially, witnesses claimed it was a drive-by shooting, but an investigation revealed the boy had been handling a friend's gun when Griffin asked him for it.
"Her intention was to put the pistol away in a safe place," HPD says. "As the boyfriend attempted to disengage the hammer to a non-firing position, it slipped and discharged the weapon. The bullet struck Waddieonne in the left arm, and went through into the left side of her chest. The boyfriend attempted to tend to Waddieonne until police and paramedics arrived."
