The massive changes on the AM stations owned by Clear Channel continue to assault local listeners.
We had somehow survived all these years without hearing Walton & Johnson or Mancow, but after a few minutes with both, we know we haven’t missed anything. (What’s up with W&J’s ultra-fey, ultra-gay sidekick? Didn’t the show get the memo that the 70s are over?)
You used to be able to get network news at the top of the hour on at least one of the Clear Channel stations. Granted, the network involved was Fox News, so you had to take things with a grain of salt.
We couldn’t find any this morning, so we tuned to KTRH, the company’s flagship news station. And we heard a local report about the Minnesota bridge collapse. Some expert from World Net Daily blamed the collapse on NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, because of the bigger trucks now rumbling freely on the highways from Mexico to Canada.
We listened intently, but in vain, for the reporter to note that World Net Daily is firmly ensconced in the cloud-cuckoo-land of right-wing nuttery. That it has distributed in its news stories and syndicated columns ominous conspiracy theories that a shadow government is trying to create a “North American Union,” where the U.S. will merge with Mexico. That World Net Daily would pin 9/11 on illegal immigration from Mexico if it could.
We guess there wasn’t time enough to include any of that, though. So for all KTRH listeners know, a respected expert with no axe to grind blames NAFTA, and that’s all they need to know. – Richard Connelly
