Today was the first day of school for most elementary and secondary-school kids here in the Houston area. Once again they are faced with dragging themselves up and out of bed for yet another year of boredom, intrigue, and peer pressure. That, and you know, puberty sucks.
Over on Art Attack, we listed the ten things we miss about going back to school, including the food, school supplies and the illicit note-passing. Our favorite thing about hitting classes again in August though was finding out what bands everyone had gotten into over the summer. It was like comparing war stories after leaving the shit in Vietnam.
Most school songs deal with the carnal desires of teens, or the overt oppression by the educational establishment. You never escape either, as they both end up ruling your life for better or worse. You need money and a good job to get the pretty boys and girls, right? At least that's what all those John Hughes movies taught us.
