Rocks Off reached out to the artists playing this year's Houston Press Music Awards showcase Sunday, August 5, and asked them to introduce themselves. Here's what they sent back.
Rocks Off: When and where was your first gig in Houston, and how did it go?
Doughbeezy: I've played at local spots since 15 years old, but my first official gig on a big stage was at Warehouse Live April 29, 2011 opening for Yelawolf. It went better than perfect, words can't describe the love I got that night. People were singing my songs word for word.
RO: What Houston-area venues do you play most often?
DB: Warehouse Live. Shout-out to LA and the rest of the staff for the hospitality they show me!
RO: How often do you play in the area?
DB: Pretty often. Forty-plus shows in the Houston area since April, 2011
RO: Describe your sound in eight words or less.
DB: Witty. Different. Creative. Aggressive.
RO: How did you come up with your name?
DB: I used to get money in ways that I'm not proud of today, which led to the nickname Doughboy. Once I decided to pursue my music career, I figured "Doughboy" would either lead me to a copyright issue with Pillsbury or that name would be taken by 100,000 other rappers, so I decided to go with "Doughbeezy" because people was already calling me "Beezy" and I felt that Doughbeezy was more catchy.
RO: Where would you like yourself or your band to be in one year? Ten years? Forty?
DB: One year: TV and radio. Ten years: CEO of my company "Headwreckas," giving opportunities to other people. Forty: Retired, but still generating revenue from my brand and company.
RO: What is one thing you'd like to do (as a musician) before you pack it in?
DB: Go on a worldwide tour.
