Last Tuesday, in a statement released to the media by his publicist, Johnny Manziel said, "I'm hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016. I also continue to be thankful to those who really know me and support me."
Wednesday, predictably, he partied. I'm guessing he partied each night after that from then to now. (Just a hunch.) Now, today, it will be announced that Manziel has been indicted on charges of misdemeanor assault with bodily injury, stemming from a series of incidents during an evening back in January involving his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley. The indictment was first reported by CBS DFW, citing sources.
Manziel certainly has an odd way of taking care of his "issues."
Back on January 29, during an evening that began with a confrontation between Manziel and Crowley at the Hotel ZaZa in Fort Worth and ended at Crowley's apartment, Manziel reportedly hit Crowley so hard that she temporarily lost hearing in one ear. After that, Crowley sought and received a protective order against the 23-year-old former Cleveland Brown and Texas A&M quarterback in which he could not see her for two years.
According to wire reports, here is an overview of the incident that night:
Crowley says she and Manziel had a confrontation in a Dallas hotel room, which continued downstairs at the valet station. She said he forced her into a car and a valet ignored her pleas for help. The two drove to where her car was parked in front of a Dallas bar, she said in an affidavit. She accused Manziel of getting into the driver's seat and beginning to drive. She says when she tried to jump out of the car, Manziel stopped, dragged her back into the car and hit her.
Sending the case to a grand jury is an odd step for a case like this, as normally the grand jury hears only felony cases. However, police chose this route after refraining from arresting Manziel, despite interviews with Crowley and several witnesses.
The indictment is the latest in what's been a string of self-destructive behaviors on the part of Manziel that have kept him in the news on an almost daily basis over the past few weeks. After being spotted around Hollywood by TMZ several times (and providing very accommodating, possibly drunken interviews), Manziel was in an automobile, reportedly as a passenger (although footage shot earlier in the night showed him getting into the driver's seat and driving off), that was involved in a one-car accident.
Later in the week, it was reported that Manziel was the subject of a lawsuit claiming $32,000 in damage had been caused to a Los Angeles house that he rented with a friend for a couple of days. The lawsuit claimed, among other things, that there were mushrooms and cocaine on the dining-room table. Manziel's response to the lawsuit and the accident was to fly to the Coachella music festival near Palm Springs.
Along the way, Manziel was fired by his second agent in three months. He was also fired by the Browns back in early March. One person who hasn't fired Johnny Manziel? His friend and former handler during his A&M days, Nate "Uncle Nate" Finch, who tweeted for the first time in 52 days yesterday in a string of sad, bizarre tweets begging for Johnny to call him, or see the light, or something...
Of course, not all the replies were as unconditionally supportive as Uncle Nate...
But Uncle Nate was undaunted and went right back to work, drumming up support from every corner of Twitter that his 2,590 followers could reach...
