SeaSide Poke, the highly anticipated brick-and-mortar from the masterminds behind the popular (and former) pop-up at Doc Holliday's, is finally head to 2118 Lamar Street in East Village next month, with a soft opening projected for early May.
"Houston's poke proliferation is real," says SeaSide partner Vu Bui in a press release. With that being said, a second location of SeaSide is also planned for another, yet-to-be-revealed location by year's end as well.
As a team, Bui and partners Juan Cao, Kristy Nguyen and Alex Boquiren are certainly major power players among Houston's poke scene, with two chefs who have some pretty serious credentials on board as well. Chef Tai Nguyen came up through Fish & Knife, Soma Sushi and Uchi, and chef Vuthy "Tee" Srey, a Memphis transplant, has worked at both Aka and MF Sushi.
Together, they'll offer eight signature bowls that incorporate traditional poke with a Houston twist. One such special will be an ahi tuna poke with watermelon, fennel and ponzu, though the main emphasis here will be on build-your-own poke starting with a base of rice, salad or yucca chips and the added bonus of seasonal, local produce and sustainable sushi-grade fish for your filler.
The 1,700-square-foot restaurant will feature a floor-to-ceiling mural — of what remains a mystery — dine-in and take-out options, indoor and outdoor dining, and parking available across the street.
SeaSide is the latest in a slew of poke openings, including Moku Bar, Ono Poke and Pokeology. Just this week, CultureMap also reported that New York-based poke eatery PokeWorks will head to the Heights by the end of 2017 as well.
