The American String Quartet brings its powerful playing and exquisite musicianship to a collaborative presentation of music and poetry, with readings by Academy Award-winning poet and war journalist Tom Sleigh. This moving and memorable performance of inspired compositions is interwoven with Sleigh’s clear and profound view on the effects of war. War and Healing displays the emotions of war through music written through centuries of conflict by the greatest composers from around the world: Bach’s deeply sorrowful Prelude in F Minor, Shostakovich’s musical autobiography in Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Bartók’s pre-war depiction in Marcia from Quartet No. 6 , Barber’s intense Adagio from Quartet for Strings, Op. 11, and Beethoven’s “Serioso” – an assertion of triumph and the power of human will.
