Cindy Lisica Gallery is pleased to host Petra Nováková Ondrei?ková’s captivating and boundary-crossing exhibition, Biotope. Much like a habitat provides a living place for a population, a biotope hosts a specific assemblage of plants and animals. The artist makes reference to each artwork becoming its own metaphorical community. The relationship with other objects and the room itself serves to add further dimension to each piece. Petra’s methods and studio process also consider the concepts of time and serendipity, and often her previously shown materials transform into new pieces after they become “mentally outlived”, reappearing as new ideas and forms. Her work goes beyond the traditional scope of drawing and painting and creates 3-dimensional collages the artist refers to as “knife drawings” or “spatial images”. The act of cutting into the materials constitutes a decision. It creates openings and also shapes the material that remains after each intervention. The artwork eliminates perceived hierarchies between negative and positive space by utilizing light and shadow as well as the physicality of the object. Each piece in Biotope is complex in its design and execution and entices the viewer to ponder the created environment with enjoyment and curiosity.
