Black Iris Project

Promotional Event Description

Black Iris Project at Miller Outdoor Theatre!

Founded in 2016 by award-winning choreographer Jeremy McQueen, The Black Iris Project is a ballet collaborative and education vehicle which creates new, relevant classical & contemporary ballet works that celebrate diversity and Black history.

Based in New York City, the project hosts a team of predominantly artists of color of delivering cross-discipline and wholly original works. Championing individuality, the collaborative harnesses the Black community’s inherent creative spirit to encourage and inspire youth of color to pursue art, movement, and music as an expressive outlet and a means for collective healing.

For their Texas debut Jeremy McQueen’s Black Iris Project will be performing a collection of their most dynamic works including the world premiere of The Storm, a new ballet inspired by the Middle Passage, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey. Also on the program will be Black Iris, the collective’s signature work, inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting Black Iris III, and A Mother’s Rite, a solo work set to Stravinsky’s iconic The Rite of Spring.
