“I was captivated by this show 25 years ago when I first heard it. I’ve always wanted to do it. So, it’s been amazing to watch this come together,” says John Carmona, the director of Upstage Theatre’s production of Closer Than Ever.

The musical revue, by Richard Maltby and David Shire, offers a collection of musical observations about life, falling in and out of love, growing older and finding your place in the world. Its selections have become new cabaret standards, and Carmona says he finds them absolutely timeless.

“Maltby and Shire wrote these pieces based on stories they heard from their friends,” he says. “These are such true experiences, and so much of this still resonates.”

His love for the piece is so great, it’s embraced the cast of two men and two women who, Carmona says, happily went along with his passion for it. “I’ve been telling them all through the process, ‘I love this show!’ And they really get that love.”

Onstage are Faith Taylor, Ruth Calabrese, Joe Carl White and Michael Shivers, a blend of newcomers and veterans to Houston’s arts scene.

8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 2 p.m. Sundays. Through November 21. Obsidian Theater, 3522 White Oak. For information, call 713-838-7191 or visit upstagetheatre.org. $18.

ORGANIZER DESCRIPTION: The modern world gets an up-close-and-personal examination in Closer Than Ever. Written by David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr., the story explores the unique voices of individuals who struggle with aging, unrequited love and more. Featuring carefully crafted songs, this unique theater experience goes beyond the songbook of Shire and Maltby and introduces audiences to the psyche of each new character as they navigate through life. Making its way to Houston's Obsidian Art Space, Closer Than Ever illustrates the poignancy and hilarity of everyday struggles through the power of song.
