Join artist Lily Cox-Richard, Cymene Howe, Professor of Post-Human Anthropology at Rice University, and special guests for a discussion about cultural and material histories in relation to Cox-Richard’s exhibition, Berm, on view September 22 – November 3. Lily Cox-Richard’s sculpture engages familiar forms and materials that have become unmoored from their original contexts and roles. She mines this distance by digging into their cultural and materials histories and forging new paths between them. She has been awarded an Artadia grant, a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, a postdoctoral fellowship in the University of Michigan’s Society of Fellows, and residencies at the Core Program, Millay Colony, RAIR Philadelphia, and the MacDowell Colony. Recent solo exhibitions include Yvonne (Guatemala City), Artpace (San Antonio, TX), She Works Flexible (Houston), Hirschl & Adler Modern (New York), Vox Populi (Philadelphia), and the Hudson River Museum (New York). Lily Cox-Richard lives and works in Richmond, VA, where she is an assistant professor in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Cymene Howe is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Rice University and the author of Intimate Activism (Duke 2013), Ecologics: Wind and Power in the Anthropocene (Duke 2019), and co-editor of The Anthropocene Unseen: A Lexicon (Punctum 2018). Her current research centers on cryohuman relations and the implications of melting ice in the Arctic and beyond – the topic of NOT OK, her documentary film about the first of Iceland’s glaciers to fall victim to climate change. Cymene also co-hosts the Cultures of Energy podcast. [Organizer's description]
