Artist Reception: Friday, February 15, 6 to 8:30 pm. Live performance by composer and performance artist Gerritt Wittmer, 7:30 to 8 p.m. Exhibition catalog available. Anya Tish Gallery is delighted to announce NEVERODDOREVEN, an exhibition featuring recent paintings and installations by Houston-based artist Garland Fielder. The artist initiates a meditative state of associations during his third solo exhibition with the gallery. Fielder references the balanced nature of his work by using a palindrome as the exhibition’s title. NEVERODDOREVEN hints at the symmetry and reflection to be discovered. At the heart of the exhibition resides an enduring fascination with the psychology behind various tests of interpretation, such as Rorschach ink blots. While those references are not literally transposed into the art, one can begin to elucidate reflected symmetries hiding in various ensembles through a meditative viewing of the entire exhibition as an installation. Large diptychs alluding to ancient Mesoamerican ballgame courts share the gallery with sculptural installations. Truss forms reconstructed and repurposed into way-finding contraptions echo astrological configurations in their wake. Fielder places the viewer into a physical space that will instigate an internal dialogue born of mystery and monument. The Gallery is also pleased to announce a special performance on the evening of the opening by composer and performance artist Gerritt Wittmer. An original work conceived in conjunction with the exhibition will be performed live. Garland Fielder has earned both a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas, Austin and a Master of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Texas, Denton. Fielder has exhibited in such venues as MADI Art Museum of Geometric Art, Dallas, Texas; Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, San Antonio, Texas; University of Art and Design, Helsinki, Finland; Pickled Art Center, Beijing, China; Tashiro-Kaplan Arts Complex, Seattle, Washington; and the Jung Center, Houston, Texas. His work was included in the book Texas Abstract: Modern | Contemporary and will be included in the upcoming publication, New American Paintings, No. 138. His work has been juried into exhibitions by such notable curators as Rita Gonzalez of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Dr. Kevin Salatino of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Robert Rosenblum of the Guggenheim Museum, New York. Additionally, working as a published critical writer, Fielder has contributed to numerous art journals, including ArtForum and ArtLies. [Organizer's description]
