Houston Artist Commissioning Project, Part 2

Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) Houston Artist Commissioning Project promotes and sustains Houston’s working artists and artist communities by supporting the creation of new virtual and live works across all performing arts disciplines. Six local artists have been awarded funds to create new work, premiering in Jones Hall over two weekends in Fall 2021. Houston is the most culturally diverse city in the nation. In celebrating artists’ voices here at home, we promote more connected and thriving communities. SPA believes Black artists, Indigenous artists, artists of color, artists in the LGBTQ+ community, artists with disabilities, and woman artists must be centered through this project. To that end, we strongly encouraged applications from artists with these identities or members of other marginalized communities. Program: RIYAAZ QAWWALI Kabir A message of harmony for all faiths, expressed through the lyrics and music having South Asian roots through the medium of qawwali. HARRISON GUY Colored Carnegie The newest work from the Director of Urban Souls Dance Company centers on the story of Houston’s first Black library. DEBORAH D.E.E.P. MOUTON The World’s Intermission Houston’s former poet laureate explores living through the last year, in a new one-act play. [Organizer's description]
