  • 1252 Tapas

9595 Six Pines Dr., Spring Outside Houston

    281-419-1260

1252 Tapas is a highly adult space on a highly family-friendly stretch of The Woodland's verdant Market Square, with a patio that overlooks the spacious lawn and beckons to tired adults with sangria-centered happy hours and indulgent tapas dishes that the kids would hate: baby octopus cooked in its ink or grilled morcilla - blood sausage - with apple sauce and Dijon mustard. There's no need to travel inside the Loop when there's elegant food and décor to be found right down the street at 1252 Tapas.

  • Abe's Cajun Market

1080 Clear Lake City Blvd. Clear Lake

    281-480-2237

Skip the seafood po-boys and try the stuffed chicken breasts or smothered pork chops. Abe's is not your typical Cajun restaurant -- it's a Cajun meat market. It's also a great place to stock up on hard-to-find items like andouille, tasso, boudin, crawfish pie, and stuffed pork chops without having to drive all the way to Louisiana.

  • Adair Kitchen

    5161 San Felipe St. Galleria

    713-623-6100

Siblings Nick Adair and Katie Adair Barnhart opened Adair Kitchen to provide Houstonians with the kind of home cooking they enjoyed growing up. The Adair family owns a number of restaurants in Houston, including a Tex-Mex chain and a burger joint, and that diversity of culinary interests is reflected in the simple menus at Adair Kitchen. The Galleria restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a light, spacious dining room that usually packed with neighborhood people grabbing a bite before work or holding a business meeting at a booth during lunch. There's nothing groundbreaking about Adair Kitchen, which is part of what makes it so comfortable. It's simple, standard American (and Mexican) cooking done right, without any bells and whistles.

  • Afrikiko

9625 Bissonnet Outer Loop - SW

    713-773-1400

Afrikiko is about as close to a bona fide African experience (an experience, by the way, that usually includes soccer on the eatery's satellite TV) as you're going to get here in the States. Owned by a Ghanaian family, the eatery that's inconspicuously tucked behind a Burger King makes authentic fufu (the thick-paste, doughy-like staple of that particular region of the planet) with goat meat, palm nut soup and jollof rice. If you don't see your favorite dish on the menu, such as red-red stew, the restaurateurs will gladly make it for you. Additionally, if you're an obruni (the Twi language term for "white person"), the cooks are conscious enough to tame down the hot factor. So if you like it spicy, tell them and you'll be sweating like mad, much like you would be on a hot day under the African sun.

  • Alamo Drafthouse - Vintage Park

114 Vintage Park Blvd. Jersey Village

    832-559-5959

Alamo Drafthouse has long been known as a great spot to catch a movie with a glass of cold craft beer delivered right to your seat during the film. Both area locations -- the other one is near Katy -- recently upped their games by adding cocktails and creating a menu that's much more restaurant than movie theater in terms of selection and quality. Though some appetizers miss the mark, the pizzas and burgers are the stars of the show, making use of fresh ingredients and simple preparation to delight diners from the previews through the credits. With the simple system of writing down your order and flagging it for the servers to see, food is prepared and delivered throughout the course of the movie by nearly invisible waiters trying their best to stay quiet and out of site. And let's face it, few things pair with movies like booze, so the craft margaritas and spiked shakes are a welcome addition to any moviegoing experience.

  • Alfreda's Cafeteria

    5101 Almeda Third Ward

    713-528-0020

This cafeteria-style restaurant on Almeda is like a smaller version of This Is It, with all of the heart and soul intact in a comfortable, homey setting. Standouts on the steam table here are the oxtails, chicken and catfish, as well as the bacon fat-laden green beans and cabbage, all of which are served with a genuine smile. Portions are immense, so beware: You won't be walking out of here hungry, or with room for dessert. Luckily, Alfreda's packages its desserts (try the banana pudding) to go, so you can enjoy them later.

  • Alma Latina Taqueria

    902 Telephone Rd. East End

    713-926-7609

Beware: Not all Alma Latina restaurants are created equal. But if you make it to the correct one - the location on Telephone Road in the Second Ward - your journey will be richly rewarded. Stay away from the breakfast tacos and instead focus on dishes like the hot, vividly flavored menudo or the hearty huevos rancheros. Both will either fuel you for a long day ahead or take the edge off that raging hangover and allow you to salvage what's left of your day, even if you didn't get up until noon. That's right: Alma Latina serves breakfast all day, although they charge a little extra after 10:30 a.m.

Finish with one of the best tres leches cakes in town and a cafecito.

  • Amy's Ice Creams

    3816 Farnham Lower Shepherd-Kirby

    713-526-2697

Amy's started out as an Austin institution, but Amy's in Houston opened its doors in the early 1990s. Since then the ice cream, in its quirky little spot on Farnham, has grown to be a local favorite. The loud plaster cow and eccentric exterior makes it fit right in with its equally fun neighbors. Seven regular flavors are paired with seasonal and limited time-flavors, making every visit quite possibly something new. Mix-ins, specialty cones, and the occasional non-dairy favorites are also available. Part of the application process for potential employees is decorating a paper bag, which should tell you something about the staff.

  • Another Time Soda Fountain

800 Third St., Rosenberg Outside Houston

    281-232-2999

The drinks are the biggest draw at Another Time Soda Fountain, the highly authentic and old-fashioned restaurant located in a 1910 building in historic downtown Rosenberg. Here you'll find lime coolers, Coke shakes, phosphates and homespun shakes and malts -- not the kind of dessert drinks you're likely to encounter at many other places. The one-pound banana splits are a thing of beauty and are best when split, of course, as are the huge burgers and chili cheese dogs.

  • Babin's Seafood House

    19529 I-45 N., Shenandoah Conroe

    281-296-8829

There's a long wait for tables during lunch and dinner at what is arguably the best seafood house on Houston's north side; they also don't take reservations. The seafood is remarkably fresh, and sometimes better than you get in Galveston or Kemah. The fried flounder is expertly prepared and never overcooked and Amberjack is often available. Even the side dishes are special, most notably the Cajun-style dirty rice. Good wines are served by the glass. The waiters are overworked, but they try hard at this Shenandoah establishment.

  • Banana Leaf

9889 Bellaire Blvd. Outer Loop - SW

    713-771-8118

Banana Leaf is one of the few Malaysian restaurants in town, but it's the best. The friendly service and exciting dishes, such as the sweetly spicy sambal shrimp or the hand-tossed roti canai, make the restaurant a destination despite its casual atmosphere and low prices. Take advantage of its generous BYOB policy and bring a bottle of Riesling to supplement the savory pan-Asian cuisine.

  • Banana Leaf

9896 Bellaire Blvd. Outer Loop - SW

    713-271-2338

The second location of Banana Leaf offers the same solid menu of Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine, ranging from chow fun to Thai-style soft shell crab, but in a much larger space. You can get private rooms here or a spot in one of the palapa-shaded booths if you're lucky. It's still BYOB (with no corkage fee), but you'll still have to wait for a table on busy nights.
