Give the Gift of Minimalism

Can't make it out to starry Marfa for a conceptual, hip holiday? You can stay here and think about minimalist art. That'll be just as much fun, right?

It will if Santa brings you the new book Chinati: The Vision of Donald Judd. The truly gorgeous volume is hot off the presses, and retiring Chinati Foundation director Marianne Stockebrand was at the Menil Collection bookstore Monday night, signing copies and talking about the mission of Chinati, which the book aims to illuminate.

Judd's vision was "to integrate art with architecture and nature," said Stockebrand. "It's a major philosophical point that drove much of Judd's work and his thinking, to not have it isolated, but to have the reality of the outdoors, of all components of nature, as a part of art and architecture."

Priced at $65 and available at the Menil Bookstore, the book is a great present for the art lovers in your life. For the investment-minded, a boxed, limited edition-copy (just 250 were produced), signed by all the living artists featured in the book, will set you back $2500. And just in case you have any Teutonic types on your shopping list, the book is being published in Stockebrand's native German, as well.
