Today, Gexa Energy Broadway Across America at the Hobby Center announced its 2011-2012 season, and the selections are, dare we say, edgy?
The only "whatever" selection on the list is a summer engagement of The Lion King (July 10 - August 12, 2012). Every generation has its Cats.
But the rest of the schedule features only ONE TV/movie inspired piece: The Addams Family (January 10 - 15, 2012); only TWO jukebox musicals: the roots-rock revue Million Dollar Quartet (February 28 - March 4, 2012) and the Frank Sinatra-version-of-Mamma Mia! Come Fly Away (April 10 - 15, 2012); as well as an actual, real-life original musical, 2010's Tonys favorite Memphis (October 25 - 30, 2011).
And if that's kind of blowing your mind, just wait.
Carrie Fisher will be bringing her critically acclaimed, endearingly narcissistic one-woman-show Wishful Drinking to the Hobby Center (May 15 - 20, 2012). Yes, Princess Leia herself dishes on her Hollywood upbringing, Star Wars, her party girl reputation (she was one of the only ones that could keep up with John Belushi in substance consumption) and her addictive personality and bipolar disorder.
Our interest is piqued.
