Sam Raimi and James Franco Take On Baum in Oz: The Great and Powerful

It doesn't hit screens until March 8, 2013, but this week the trailer for Sam Raimi's Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, hit the Web. The original film premiered in August 1939, meaning this film was more or less 74 years in the making.

The film stars James Franco as the titular wizard, Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good Witch, Mila Kunis as the soon-to-be The Wicked Witch of the West and Rachel Weisz as The Wicked Witch of the East. Obviously the deck is stacked for this one to be a hit, and the effects in the trailer look damned expensive.

It's easy to fret about Hollywood tampering with a legendary property like Oz, but with Raimi directing and music by Danny Elfman, you should shut your stupid mouth. Sam Raimi is awesome. Somewhere Johnny Depp is surrounded by dozens of beautiful naked women and kicking himself for not getting in on the fun.

I wonder what Frank Morgan thinks about having someone as hot and stoned as Franco playing him as a younger man. Can you tweet a man who died in 1949?
