Then and Now: The Galvez Hotel

Built as a symbol of Galveston Island's physical and financial recovery from the Great Storm of 1900, the Hotel Galvez, with its prime beach-front location, quickly became known as the Queen of the Gulf. Building was completed in 1911. A century later, the hotel is still a landmark on the island. Owners George Mitchell and the Mitchell family have poured $11 million in renovations for the hotel's 100th anniversary. We thought you'd like to see a few then and now shots of the Hotel Galvez, the only historic beachfront hotel in Texas.

The Hotel Galvez will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a two-day family festival, June 10 and June 11. Live music, food, games, rededication ceremonies, give-aways, tours of the hotel, and a seaside fireworks show are all on the agenda. For information, visit www.hotelgalvez100.com. Free.
