The Flatlanders' Butch Hancock and Joe Ely as well as Sara Hickman can do more than burn down a concert stage. These creative types, as well as more than 35 folks that are more known for their musicianship, can also paint the crap out of a canvas and shoot the mess out of a photograph.
Starting on Saturday, May 7, the ArtCar Museum, 140 Heights Boulevard, is debuting "Musicians Who Make Art." Guest curator Melissa Noble, who used to co-host the Living Arts program on KPFT 90.1 FM, is responsible for programming the exhibit that will showcase contemporary abstract expressionism, fantasy and folk genres.
Noble stumbled across the idea while working as a videographer and photographer on KPFT's Wide Open Spaces, which showcases honky-tonk and roots tunes as well as interviews with songwriters. Eventually, Noble became hip to the fact that many of the featured musicians were visual artists, too.
Many of the participants in this show are living and creating in Texas, including the Lubbock-based Hancock and Ely, Houston's Loretta Kovacic and Texas turned Paris, France artist Andy Feehan.
Reception hours are from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. The show hangs through August 7. For more information, check out the ArtCar Museum's website.
